Comparatives
One syllable words use [-er + than]
smart =  smarter than
young =  younger than
If the word ends in [-e], add [-r]
nice = nicer than
Superlatives
One syllable words use [the + -est]
smart =  the smartest
young =  the youngest
If the word ends in [-e], add [-st]
nice = the nicest

Superlatives
If the word ends in a C-V-C pattern, double the consonant, add [the + -est]
wet =  the wettest
big =  the biggest
